Learn and cook

Being one of my grandmothers from the State of Guerrero in Mexico and having myself grown up on pozole, it’s embarrassing that I have never learned to cook it —a delicious soup with corn and pork. There are a few varieties on how to make it, but my favorite one is the green pozole —sooo good and sooo non-diet :P

But today, I offered to cook some of the white kind. So I’m sort of inventing it —with educated guesses ;) Right now, I’m cooking some stock that I’ll be using with some of the chicken to add to the canned corn. We’ll see how it turns out.

Why I recommend Rainier Veterinary Hospital to locals

Dr. Heino is the sweetest and caring vet I’ve met in Seattle.

The hydrants he has outside the clinic say it all —too cute ;)

First intent

Yesterday was seven months since Gala’s passing, and somehow, I still feel a bit uneasy about this goal. Yet I feel better in many respects, and my daily walks with Uma and her mingling with other dogs have certainly helped me overcome my sentiments.

While at the vet’s office yesterday, I finally got the courage to volunteer to weekly walk one of their shelter dogs. Unfortunately, they don’t have any dogs at the moment, so I guess that’s fortunate really :) I left my phone number, so they can call me anytime they need me.

I won’t check this goal just yet until it really happens… but at least I made my first intention towards it and, especially, towards the dogs who need it :)

Good, healthy dog :)

I finally took Uma to the vet yesterday —just a week before her yearly shots were due. The doctor was very sweet with her, and commented on her overall good health :) Because of Seattle’s weather, she doesn’t need anything for heart worm and ticks ::YAY!!:: She got her “medal” for her rabies shot.

So she’ll be in tip-top shape, I’ll just need to follow his advice on:
  • applying a preventive for fleas
  • brush her teeth more often
  • trim her nails
  • help her lose some weight (about 3kg)

Aug. 29, 2007

I’m grateful for:
  1. Hogwarts magic (and not a 43T glitch) being the culprit of all the weirdness at 43T for the past two days —how else can it be explained that I double-cheered the same goal, and particularly thisgoal!! LOL!!
  2. The library tracing and locating two items that I had claimed returned
  3. Getting supplies for my photographs
  4. Sitting at a park bench to read
  5. The wonderful vet that attended Uma

Meditative

Contemplating a lunar eclipse is literarily out of this world ;) And making a little collage about it is phenomenal:

This is my third time I’ve watched a lunar eclipse, but it’s my first time that I follow it more closely while photographing it. Just before totality, the moon appeared to be a red balloon hanging from the sky; it also seemed quite smaller compared to its uneclipsed form. Unfortunately, tiredness and my soporific state prevented me from watching the whole length of the eclipse back to a bright full moon, yet the most part that I witnessed was a surreal experience —a yin version of a solar eclipse.

The subtleness and length of the eclipse permitted to appreciate different aspects of it. At times, the event absorbed me into almost an hypnotic state that I began divagating… the space and distance between us became variable… seeing the textures, and the lights, and the shadows… and then the awareness of the masses of the bodies of the Earth, and the Moon, and the Sun, and the event we were witnessing… It was beyond comprehension… so surreal…

I’m grateful for:
  1. A spectacular total lunar eclipse
  2. My film camera, my digital camera, and my tripods
  3. The pixelated photos of my digital camera —which give me an idea of how my film photos will come out
  4. The suspense until I develop the photos from my film camera
  5. Not giving up on 43 Things in spite of the confusion due to the temporary virtual limbo where entries, photos, and cheers went into today

  4. A nice game of Canasta with family and friends
  5. The clear skies to fully appreciate the total lunar eclipse that’ll start in 2 minutes

A very basic bird feeder

...but so much worth it!! I got a bird feeder in mid-spring, and have enjoyed our wing-visitors so, so much. They bring joy and music to our lives :)

Next year, I’d like to get a nicer one —or even build one— to attract different kinds of birds simultaneously. With this bird feeder, the kind of birds has generally been decided with the kind of birdseed we put out.

Currently, we have these little guys, and I have no idea what type of bird they are, just that they’re very tiny and they chirp a lot :)

Fascination

My fascination of watching my garden grow knows no limits. Everyday I do a round to check my plants: check for bugs, for weeds, soil moisture, and the plants’ health, growth, and sprouts.

Today, three very little watermelons were born. They’re so tiny they escaped me, but A didn’t fail to notice and pointed them to me.

They’re almost as big as a fingernail, and yet they already have their distinctive stripes and hairs and everything. Wow! Nature is amazing :)

Aug. 21, 2007

Today I’m grateful for:
  1. Hurricane Dean crossing through less-populated parts of the Yucatan Peninsula —but I’m still lighting a candle and I’m hoping for the least damage, particularly tomorrow where it will hit a much more populated area
  2. Calling a good friend who lives in Tulum (closer to where the eye passed) and finding that she was in good condition as well as everyone else
  3. Having prepared my house for hurricane season with anticipation before my extended leave
  4. The confidence that my house withstood the hurricane with minor damages, even though I’m 4,000+ km away
  5. NOAA’s webpage for up-to-the-minute information and images

Preparedness and readiness

As I’ve been observing Hurricane Dean’s progression toward the Yucatan Peninsula, I cannot but remind myself to retake this goal and put it together. I withstood the major hurricanes Emily and Wilma in 2005, when I more or less began a hurricane plan for these kind of contingencies.

When I left my home 8 months ago, I left it behind well prepared as much as I could and to my knowledge. But turns out withstanding a hurricane “in the distance” seems to be more nerve-racking than actually being physically there —especially right now as Hurricane Dean’s eye is hitting land about 300 kilometers south of my house, and the satellite images show it extending well beyond the whole peninsula.

Though I can never be totally prepared and ready for disasters, to quiet my mind, for now, I will go over my lists, notes, plans, etc., for hurricanes and floodings. Yet, having lived most of my life in “shake-prone” areas, I shall next be thinking of an earthquake and volcano-eruption plan.

Aug. 20, 2007

Today I’m grateful for:

Today I’m grateful for:
  1. Spotting a “new” plant that the previous tenants left in the garden —we’re still not sure what kind it is… peppers perhaps…
  2. Passing the half-book mark of the book I’ve challenged myself to finish before next Thursday —and reading an extra 150 pages
  3. Organizing a permanent spot as a semi-studio to work on my photographs

  5. Rain

Thanks everyone for joining in :)

As the shower is almost officially over, it’s time to mark this goal as done. Although in total I caught only two shooting stars —each one in different nights, and in no way I saw a meteor shower —, they were totally worth it, since I didn’t search for a viewing post past my backyard ;)

I want to thank everyone who joined in the team, and also the ones who couldn’t for astronomical, weather, or timing conditions. Especially, I want to thank Ru for posting a beautiful Perseid-related story and for sharing the link to the fluxtimator which was so helpful and will become quite handy for future showers.

Again, thanks everyone, and clear skies to all!

Half, middle, 50%

Today, I read the 435th page of the book —which marks the middle of its 870 pages. It has taken me 5 months to get here!! When I started reading, it took me quite some time, but I’ve read a quarter of the book in the past week alone. Hopefully, I’ll be able to finish it in time before they take the movie out of the theaters…

Aug. 17, 2007

Today I’m grateful for:
  1. My lavender seeds finally sprouting after 60+ days

Onions

My first batch of onions was ready to harvest a couple of days ago. Their crispiness and their delicate flavor was just the perfect touch for an avocado cocktail.

Basil, oregano, basil, oregano...

Giving a little break to the basil plants, I plucked a bit of oregano to experiment with the Caprese Salad. This herb gives a more subtle flavor than basil, but it’s delicious as well.

Aug. 13, 2007

Today I’m grateful for:
  1. Silver lining
  2. Yesterday’s spectacular clouds that —while impeding to watch the Perseid Meteor Shower later in the night— gave us a grand sunset
  3. A very restful nap
  4. The round glass tabletop that a neighbor posted for free outside his/her home
  5. Our landlord coming with a contractor to take measurements to install laminate floors and take away the carpet

String

After having this goal in hiatus for a couple months, today at a garage sale, I bumped into this kite string!! Now, I just have to make the kite ;)

After the disastrous experience with the newspaper kite, I just haven’t got myself to get the materials for a better one, and I need to get the book from the library again…

Tomato stakes

I built a bit-crooked bamboo structure to hold my growing tomatoes. It looks very nice, but I’ll need to get more bamboo sticks for the rest.

One shooting star

Yesterday night, I had a couple stargazing sessions of about thirty minutes each. Without being in a prime location, luckily, I saw ONE shooting star at about 3:43am. It came from Perseus and disappeared halfway in its direction to Taurus’ Aldebaran. Unlike the characteristic amber-tone of this shower, this meteor displayed a rather silverish trail.

Very few nights are as clear as yesterday was here in Seattle. I was in awe contemplating long-seen constellations. I even spotted super-bright-red Mars just above the Pleiads —or so I thought it was Mars. I miss so much my stargazing nights back home…

Aug. 11, 2007

Today I’m grateful for:
  1. Watching ONE shooting star from the Perseid Meteor Shower around 3:43am
  2. The artist’s pencils Marie gave me as a gift at her garage sale
  3. My first harvest of onions; their crispiness and flavor was unparalleled to any I’ve had before
  4. An overdue beauty program for myself and for my dog
  5. My senior yearbook/scrapbook resurfacing after 20 years of being taken away

Aug. 10, 2007

Today I’m grateful for:
  1. Clear skies and the new moon to appreciate the Perseid Meteor Shower
  2. The opportune street light that turned itself off exactly when I went outside to watch
  3. The hope of “catching” at least one meteor while contemplating the beautiful constellations
  4. The fact that it’s 2:43am, I’m still awake, and I might still catch a meteor while it’s still dark and skies are still clear
  5. The hope that —if I don’t get to see any meteors tonight— the clouds will dissipate when the shower is at its peak the dawn of the 13th

Friday, August 10, 2007

The new moon favors us this year with dark skies

The luna nueva ;) will favor us this year with dark skies and awesome visibility to appreciate this famous meteor shower :)

The peak is forcasted to be Aug. 13th at 5h UT —but partial clouds are forecasted here in Seattle :S I might attempt to get out of town a bit to avoid city lights as well.

I’ll be attentive Sunday night, but I’ll be checking it out tonight as well, since we’ll be having clear skies tonight. Crossing fingers…

Aug. 9, 2007

  2. Watching my garden grow
  3. Waking up earlier for a week now
  4. The vegetables a friend gave us as a gift from her own garden
  5. The flowers that are still blooming on my neighbors’ gardens and which make still more enjoyable my daily walk with my dog

Two caterings

Last weekend, we served two caterings. They turned out quite well. With each catering we do, we become more comfortable and at ease, but still, the work is very stressful. Unlike a restaurant, catering on site brings about extra challenges of transportation, food preservation, preparation, storing, serving, and bringing along ALL your supplies…

While I’m liking it, and it’s serving us as preparation to open our restaurant, I’m just hoping it’s not deviating us or slowing us to accomplish our main goal.

Worth for the water curtains

I got a peak of the Seafair Hydroplane Race this past Sunday.

I’m not into these speed races, but I liked the water curtains when the boats make a turn ;)

Wednesday, August 8, 2007

Just got a peak

While waiting for the Seafair Air Show to start, I got a peak of the race, but I didn’t really watch it or follow it. I’m more into sailboat races than into these fast-speed racing.

But I liked the water curtains formed by the hydroplanes when they reach the end of the circuit and have to turn. With Lake Washington and Bellevue on the background, it was a good experience nonetheless :)

Fireworks!!

I love fireworks. Every time I get a chance I’ll stop to contemplate them.

This past Saturday, as part of Seafair, a wonderful and long display of fireworks was set on Lake Washington. They can truly send you to a hypnotic state!

Impressive

These guys are truly awesome and talented.

I’m glad I didn’t leave town for this event. Plus I got a tan ;)

Impressive

The Blue Angels were the feature of the show, but the biplanes, the Patriots Jets, and the huge cargo plane were impressive as well.

I have to admit that I was a bit freaked out with the practices a couple days before, since the planes passed roaring just above my house. But once I had a good spot to overview the lake and the show, the whole experience was much more enjoyable :)

Oregano

Freshly cut oregano added a twist of flavor to a delicious pasta with tomato sauce. I am so much enjoying having my own garden :)

Out of control

My pumpkins are out of control!! They’re growing almost at the rate of Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage! LOL

And one of them just bloomed its first flower. I’m sooo excited. It’s gorgeous with such a strong and intense yellow-orange color.

I need to find out if the bloom is edible, like its sister the zucchini bloom.

Measurable goal

I’m adopting this goal to have a more measurable goal of losing weight and be healthy.

Although I’m more of a metric-kind-of-gal, I’m adopting this goal in the spirit of 43 Things —and because it’s more or less the weight I need to lose. Maybe an extra 10 pounds would be good, too, but I’ll be happy if I do get to drop the 43 :)

I’m already 4 pounds down my initial weight of 182, but I’m not going to take those into consideration. Given my actual weight of 178 – 43, my target weight shall be 135.

Amazing

Though it got a bit dizzy at times —from watching it on the third row in a packed theater (on a Monday, go figure)—, the story and action scenes just are amazing.

Highly recommended.

Amazing (rated 4 stars)

by Paul Greengrass

The action sequences of “The Bourne Ultimatum” have risen the bar to a new standard. This last installment of the trilogy has not only kept up with the storytelling and craftsmanship of the previous ones but has even surpassed them and sealed them with a golden brooch.

The only flaw was a need to balance those action scenes with the ones that are not. It appeared as though they never used a steady cam in the whole duration of the movie, and it becomes tiresome and, ironically, monotonous.

This third film of the Bourne Saga certainly adds up to the cult status the previous two films started.

Going around this

Ever since I was invited to join the team for this goal, I have been going around it…and around it…and around it…

I somehow find this goal overwhelming. I don’t even know why, but I feel as if I were at the Oscars, and I was leaving someone out!! LOL

In all seriousness, when did my life become so serious? :S

Lighten up, LunaNueva!

A review of Meridian 16: Good sound and image, small theaters

Their sound and image quality are very good, but the size of the theaters is quite small —making it highly probable that you’ll end up watching the movie in your face. You’d expect they’d assign a larger theater for a movie like “The Bourne Ultimatum” in its opening weekend.

The seats are not up to date —the soda holder is located on the back of the seats in front of you instead of the armrest, but I can live with that.

But most importantly, the popcorn is excellent...and a bucket is the way to go ;)

A review of El Mercado Latino: Excellent shop

This is a great place to get a few items for Mexican dishes. I’ve found good-quality hibiscus and banana leaves —so hard to find. The only problem is traffic and parking :S

A review of Uwajimaya Grocery And Gift Market: Exceptional grocery store

Great place to buy hard-to-find items, particularly ethnic food —except the last time I was here, they were out of banana leaves :S

The only bad thing: Parking on Sunday is a nightmare!!

A review of Hing Loon: OK, but not great

The food was quite greasy (I really shouldn’t be surprised at a Chinese restaurant, but still). The walls are painted white with the menu items posted all over them. Their decoration didn’t have any charm, and our server had such a strong accent it was hard to understand.

It was an OK restaurant, but not one I’ll be returning to.

Small oasis

This small oasis in the middle of Capitol Hill gives us a break from bustling Broadway Ave just a couple of blocks away. You can almost listen to the flute of the wonderful sculpture of Semurg (Bird of Happiness) that beautifies the park and inspires all of us who walk by.

This park is in honor of Seattle’s Sister City of Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Beautiful branch

Located in the middle of Capitol Hill, this modern building of beautiful architecture and tons of light holds a quite busy library branch —almost like the Central Library (with its due proportion). Very nice!

A rumor about B&O Espresso

...is that they’re closing due to the imminent building of a condo!! It seems they’re in talks with the constructors to have the same spot.

In the meantime, we’ll just have to get as much espresso, croissants, and German cake as we can…mmmm…

A tip I have about Value Village

With the excitement of a shopping spree, remember there’s a parking meter on the street… that is, if you don’t want to get a parking ticket :(

Yeah, been there just yesterday, and got a $35 ticket for being in absolute oblivion!! Hmmm, that surpassed the savings :S

Classy sort of me

I dressed up for the occasion :)

It’s a stretch of a resemblance of me, and, besides, my dog got cut off :S Oh well!!

Winning no matter what

For three weeks, the splendid landscapes, roads, cities, and people of France were brought to us through the amazing Tour.

Last Sunday, a naïve newcomer finished first place —winning both the white and the yellow jerseys—, after a handful of veterans were, one by one, expelled due to lack of sportsmanship and fair racing. Though Contador won with his own merit, it felt a bit like it happened by default, and it shouldn’t have felt like so.

The extent which riders are willing to go just to win is scary. Yet scarier is the wide acceptance of this —not just in bicycling, but in many other sports as well. Frankly, winning is too overrated, leaving good and exciting competition as a thing of the past. Winning no matter what, I think, is dishonest and unethical —and bad karma. Nevertheless, it looked as though the organizers are being stricter in an attempt to save the event because, with these kind of incidents and the readiness of participants to go around the rules, Le Tour is doomed.

But, we’ll always have Paris…

Bowling birthday party

I came here a few days ago to celebrate a friend’s birthday. It’s not the best bowling place I’ve ever been to, but we had great fun!

A tip I have about Matt's in the Market

In spite of their recent expansion, make a reservation if you don’t want to eat at the bar with narrow stools :S Worth the food nonetheless.

Excellent restaurant to bring visitors to Seattle.

The first time I went to The Harvest Vine

...was a while ago on my 33rd birthday when A treated me to this wonderful restaurant. Few times in my life have I had such a joyous experience savoring food.

What I most remember is their red peppers stuffed with bacalao. The flavor, the texture, and the consistency just melted in my mouth. Truly succulent food and a wonderful dining experience.

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle —when there’s a little extra money, but it’s very worth it!

Why I recommend Vios Cafe & Marketplace to locals

Vios’ excellent Greek cuisine with its casual atmosphere makes it an extraordinary place to lunch and dine. In fact, the majority of their customers are regulars. New customers come in all the time, and then they become regulars ;)

Their menu is concise with succulent specials. My absolute preferred dish is the Orzo Salad, hands down… I cannot have enough of it…

Yet, I often order tzatziki, hommus, souvlaki, the rustic baguettes (particularly the Albacore tuna!! —oh, so good), the meze plate (includes a skewer and two sides), Greek salad, pastitsio, loukanika, pork tenderloin… ooo, I think I can go all over their menu!!

And then, for dessert, there’s baklava
...and Galaktoboureko and gelato and espresso and latte
Just look at the foam!!

Being Vios one of my favorite restaurants in Seattle —if not MY favorite one—, it’s no wonder I’m a regular here. I highly recommend it :)
