Just a couple kilometers from Cholula towards the Popo (the volcano) is the small town of San Agustín. I heard of its cemetery from a woman who was decorating the grave of her baby brother at San Andrés Cemetery. She had gone there to decorate other family-members’ graves, and she told me that it was a tiny one but very beautiful.
I’m glad I took her word and went. You could see it right from the road, as it had no fence. It was quite a contrast with San Andrés. The graves were decorated with nothing but flowers. Marigolds and these burgundy “velvet” flowers prevailed, which, while simple, made it even more stunning.
Afterwards, I went to the town’s church just a few blocks south. The graves in the atrium were also decorated. They were more scattered and not as visually impressive as the cemetery’s, but interesting to see as well with the church in the background.
