San Andrés Cemetery

At the Cemetery of San Andrés Cholula, a juxtaposition of tradition and trend, old and new, luxurious and humble was displayed in an explosion of color and wonder.

There were profusely-decorated graves vs. austere ones; prominently-located ones vs. a few unlucky stashed behind the trash bins; traditional flowers vs. modern bits and pieces; natural flowers (most) vs. make-believe ones; religious images vs. pumpkin garlands and Disney/Looney Tunes/Hello Kitty balloons and toys; recently planted trees vs. older growth; temporary decorations vs. installed and built ones; detail vs. general.

I was in awe at the splendidness of it all, which gave me new insights that both made me smile and made me shed a tear, particularly the children’s ones, not only for the souls gone too soon, but for the love and care the parents and family tend to them. Very touching. Even more so when I came upon a forged crib/cage which had a little swing in it for their daughter. That one really broke my heart. But then I came unto another that had a balloon with Taz on it, and I couldn’t help but smile. It was all so surreal.

I left with a feeling of love and celebration for life.
