For my friend’s birthday lunch, I cooked an invented pasta al pesto. I had previously prepared the pesto, but I thought of adding some shrimp and mushrooms.
The prepared pesto was delicious, but it had to be spread over twice the pasta anticipated. Also one of the guests helped with cooking the shrimp and mushrooms which came out somewhat bland, lacking that “kick”. I knew it even from before, when I was watching how she cooked them. It wasn’t my kitchen, so I had to play along, and I was too tired to impose my will.
The dish came out OK, but not great as I would’ve wanted. Lesson learned: no matter how much they insist because they believe they’re experts and that you need their help —and even if it’s not your kitchen—, never let anyone help in the kitchen if their knowledge of cooking has been made clear when they ask you if the flan is ready after just 25 minutes in the oven… and then again at 40 minutes —didn’t they hear the first time that it takes at least an hour??
Oh, well, but at least the company was great!!
